Nick Townsend ruled out for rest of Texas season

Texas sophomore tight end Nick Townsend has been ruled out for the remainder of the season, according to a Thursday report from Chip Brown of Horns247. He joins senior left tackle Trevor Goosby and senior running back Hollywood Smothers as the third Longhorn ruled out for the rest of the season.

Townsend suffered a bone bruise in his knee while covering a punt during Texas' comeback win over Ohio State. The 6-foot-3, 250-pound tight end then missed wins over UTSA and Tennessee.

His workload declined after he returned. Townsend played 28 snaps against Oklahoma and 15 against Florida before logging three snaps in each of Texas' past two games.

Townsend caught six passes for 31 yards on seven targets this season, but his larger contribution came as a run blocker. Texas used him both in line and as a move blocker, giving the offense a bigger body who could shift across the formation.

Sophomore Emaree Winston has moved into the H-back role. The personnel change comes with a tradeoff because Winston does not have Townsend's length, mass or blocking punch, according to Burnt Orange Nation's assessment.

Townsend had not established himself as a consistent receiving threat, but losing him further limits a tight end position that has underachieved this season. His absence leaves Texas without one of the position group's more effective blocking options.

Why it matters

Texas loses an effective move blocker who also worked in line. Emaree Winston has taken over the H-back role, but the position's upside is reduced without Townsend available.

What to watch next

Watch how Texas divides the H-back workload with Winston replacing Townsend in that role.
