No. 25 Missouri scored on its opening possession but was shut out the rest of the way in a 13-7 loss to No. 20 Virginia in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl at EverBank Stadium. The Tigers finished the season 8-5 after two late possessions came up short.

Ahmad Hardy ran 15 times for 89 yards, finishing the season with a Missouri-record 1,649 rushing yards. Schrader's 1,627-yard record dated to two years earlier. Hardy's 43-yard run on the opening series set up Jamal Roberts' 5-yard touchdown.

Virginia answered with Will Bettridge's 42-yard field goal in the second quarter, then took a 10-7 lead on Harrison Waylee's 2-yard touchdown run. That score capped a 19-play drive lasting 10:07. Emmanuel Karnley's interception of Matt Zollers led to Bettridge's 39-yard field goal and the final margin.

The Cavaliers held the ball for 38:34. They converted 13 of 23 third downs and ran 79 plays to Missouri's 55. Virginia outgained Missouri 308-260 behind Chandler Morris, who completed 25 of 38 passes for 198 yards, and Waylee, who carried 28 times for 65 yards.

Zollers, the first true freshman to start a bowl game for Missouri, completed 12 of 22 passes for 101 yards. On the Tigers' final drive, his 24-yard completion to fellow freshman Donovan Olugbode moved Missouri to the Virginia 21.

Officials sent Zollers off for the final snap as a precaution after his head hit the turf while he threw the ball away. Brett Brown entered and threw to Daniel Blood in the end zone, where Virginia safety Devin Neal dislodged the ball to preserve the win.

Missouri linebacker Nicholas Rodriguez made 15 tackles, the most by a Tiger during the season, and broke up one pass.

Why it matters

The loss closed Missouri's season at 8-5. Hardy's 1,649 rushing yards established a program single-season record, passing Cody Schrader's mark of 1,627.
