Why Texas shapes Missouri’s playoff path

The 6-2 Tigers face a Texas team with stronger wins and little margin for error in November.

Why Texas shapes Missouri’s playoff path

Missouri’s home game against Texas on Saturday is effectively a must-win for the Tigers’ College Football Playoff hopes, according to Rock M Nation’s Nathan Hurst. Missouri enters November at 6-2, but its remaining schedule gives it little room for another loss.

Texas brings wins over Ohio State and Tennessee, while Missouri’s strongest cited result is a 45-17 victory over Florida. Hurst argues that if both teams finish 9-3 after a Texas win in Columbia, the Longhorns’ head-to-head result and stronger collection of wins would give them a clear advantage in a CFP comparison.

Missouri would still have chances to improve its case after a loss, though none looks simple. The Tigers must visit Georgia, host Kentucky and face Oklahoma, while Texas still has a road game against LSU.

The Florida win has also lost some of its earlier weight as the Gators have declined, while Missouri’s loss to Mississippi State does not look as strong after quarterback Kamario Taylor’s injury sent the Bulldogs in the wrong direction. Texas, meanwhile, can add another major road win at LSU.

Hurst’s read is that a 10-2 Missouri finish should earn a playoff berth. To qualify at 9-3, the Tigers would need to beat Texas and receive plenty of help, potentially alongside a win at Georgia.

A Missouri win would add a strong résumé piece and give the Tigers the head-to-head edge over another SEC playoff contender. After a loss, they would need help through a difficult closing stretch.

Why it matters

Missouri needs a signature win to strengthen a playoff résumé that trails Texas in quality victories. A loss would leave the Tigers trying to reach 9-3 against Georgia, Kentucky and Oklahoma while depending on other results.

What to watch next

Missouri hosts Texas on Saturday, and Texas is scheduled to visit LSU the following week.
