LSU forced three turnovers and held No. 8 Oklahoma to 17 points Saturday afternoon, but its offense could not finish enough opportunities in a 17-13 regular-season finale loss in Norman. The Tigers finished the regular season 7-5.

Linebacker Harold Perkins intercepted John Mateer on Oklahoma’s opening possession and returned the ball 44 yards to the Sooners’ 4-yard line. LSU immediately gave it back when Peyton Bowden intercepted Michael Van Buren in the end zone, and Oklahoma later took a 3-0 lead on Tate Sandell’s 38-yard field goal.

Damian Ramos tied the game with a 25-yard field goal, sending the teams to halftime at 3-3. LSU had 66 total yards in the first half, compared with Oklahoma’s 155.

The Tigers converted their second interception into the game’s first touchdown. Safety A.J. Haulcy returned his pick 42 yards to the Oklahoma 33. Van Buren then ran 23 yards to the 1. A 1-yard touchdown pass to Zavion Thomas put LSU ahead 10-3.

Freshman DJ Pickett intercepted Mateer at LSU’s 7-yard line later in the third quarter, although the Tigers followed with a three-and-out. It was LSU’s first game with at least three interceptions away from Tiger Stadium since the Tigers also had three at Ole Miss on Oct. 21, 2017.

Ramos made a 43-yard field goal with 7:56 remaining to give LSU a 13-10 lead. Oklahoma answered when Mateer found Isaiah Sategna III open for a 58-yard touchdown with 4:16 left.

LSU reached the Oklahoma 29 on its final possession, but Van Buren’s fourth-and-2 pass intended for Bauer Sharp was batted down with 1:16 remaining. The Sooners then ran out the clock.

Why it matters

LSU’s defense created three takeaways and twice gave the Tigers possession in Oklahoma territory. The offense turned those interceptions into seven points, leaving too little margin when Oklahoma struck for the go-ahead touchdown.
