The border programs first played in 1893 and have met annually since 1944.
Tennessee has won all but three meetings since 1984, but Kentucky coach Will Stein has kept that history away from his current team’s preparation. Stein said earlier this week that past results have no bearing on the Wildcats in this matchup.
The players need little help understanding the emotion involved. Kentucky cornerback Hasaan Sykes described the game as especially meaningful to the program and the state, adding that the dislike runs both ways.
Several Wildcats also bring personal ties into the matchup. Kentucky defensive lineman Tyler Thomas could face his identical twin, Tennessee tight end Trent Thomas, after the brothers played together at South Alabama before entering the transfer portal last offseason.
Kentucky offensive tackle Lance Heard spent the previous two seasons starting at left tackle for Tennessee and earned Third-Team All-SEC recognition last fall. On3 Kentucky reported that Tennessee’s addition of five-star tackle David Sanders included a promise of Heard’s position, contributing to Heard’s decision to leave before he arrived in Lexington this spring.
Stein praised Heard’s leadership, practice habits and NFL potential, calling him a first-round talent. Defensive lineman Tavion Gadson also recalled physical, trash-talking exchanges with Heard during the 2025 season before the two became Kentucky teammates.
Tennessee linebacker Arion Carter described the matchup as historic and said the Volunteers still discuss the barrel tradition inside their locker room.
