No. 4 Alabama defeated LSU 20-9 on Saturday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium, capitalizing on LSU’s offensive mistakes while building a 17-3 halftime lead.

LSU’s defense opened with a fourth-down stop by West Weeks, but the Tigers came away empty after a 10-play, 48-yard drive when Damian Ramos missed a 30-yard field-goal attempt. Alabama then turned a fumble by Bauer Sharp into a 45-yard Conor Talty field goal and a 3-0 lead.

Ramos tied the game from 37 yards after freshman Harlem Berry broke a 37-yard run. Alabama answered with a seven-play, 75-yard drive capped by Daniel Hill’s four-yard touchdown run. With 22 seconds left in the half, Ty Simpson found Ryan Williams for a 13-yard score.

The first-half numbers reflected Alabama’s advantage. The Crimson Tide held a 244-131 edge in total yardage, while Simpson threw for 210 yards compared with 76 for Nussmeier.

LSU moved deep into Alabama territory early in the third quarter, but a false start, a timeout and a 14-yard sack forced another field goal. Ramos converted from 44 yards to make it 17-6.

Michael Van Buren Jr. entered at quarterback with 4:19 left in the third quarter. LSU soon received another opening when Harold Perkins Jr. forced and recovered a Simpson fumble after a nine-yard sack. The Tigers took possession at the Alabama 38.

Van Buren connected with Barion Brown for 19 yards on third-and-13, reaching the Alabama 7. A false start and a 10-yard sack again stalled the drive. With 10:28 remaining, Ramos made a 37-yard field goal to cut the margin to 17-9.

Talty’s 44-yard field goal with 4:25 left completed the scoring. LSU fell to 5-4 overall and 2-4 in SEC play, with Ramos accounting for all nine Tigers points.
